The ACT Government thanks the Canberra community for the feedback provided on the updated Stromlo Forest Park master plan.

Seven written submissions and 744 online responses were received during the consultation period which ran from early December 2015 to 5 February 2016. The number of responses is a clear indication of the popularity of the Park and the great deal of interest in its future.

The Stromlo Forest Park master plan process began in 2009 and established a strategy and vision for the Park, as well as aspirations for its future. Significant community consultation was undertaken at this time, and sporting bodies, the wider community, local interest groups and other stakeholders all contributed to creating the long-term outlook for the Park. The original master plan was released in 2010.

In 2014 the ACT Government reconfirmed its commitment to Stromlo Forest Park by commencing a review and update of the 2010 master plan. This was a timely opportunity to consider any new or emerging opportunities or impacts arising from progressed design, planning and construction of the adjacent Molonglo residential precincts as well as broader recreational and regional trends.

The final master plan is a far-reaching vision that will facilitate Stromlo Forest Park’s evolution into a vibrant, specialist centre for recreational and professional sports in Canberra.

While cycling, equestrian, running and walking will continue to be key activities within the Park it is also becoming an integral recreation resource for the residents of Molonglo. The ACT Government is confident the final master plan balances a range of new sport and recreation opportunities at the Park, while still being considerate of traditional user groups.

A new $33 million 50 metre pool is the first significant project that has been funded at the Park, and early planning work is already underway to identify the scope and services that will be offered. The design will include the capacity for additional features to be added over time and for possible expansion as the suburbs surrounding the Park continue to grow.

Construction of the pool is expected to commence in 2017, with completion in 2019.

In addition to the new pool, a range of additional projects have also been identified as possible future developments at Stromlo Forest Park. Whilst not currently funded, tourist accommodation, an enclosed oval, district playing fields, a 12km road cycling circuit and an extension of the criterium track are also included in the final master plan, and will be progressed and consulted on as funding becomes available.

As an aspirational document, the Stromlo Forest Park master plan may be updated in the future as needs evolve and recreational trends change. It does not commit the current ACT Government, or any future government, to provide partial or full funding for any of the identified projects.

Along with the final master plan (PDF – 15.2Mb), the ACT Government has also released a community consultation report (PDF – 2.1Mb) and the government’s response (PDF – 66Kb) to the main themes that were raised during the consultation period.
